Welcome to WELS Mission to the Children
WELS Mission to the Children
is a Christian, non-profit, volunteer organization supported solely by the prayers, offerings, and material donations of Christian
individuals, congregations, and church groups.
What We Do...
The purpose of WELS Mission to the Children is to bring the Gospel to
children and their families in northwestern Sonora, Mexico, and to help
them meet their basic physical needs.
To bring the Gospel, WELS Mission to the Children cooperates
with mission activities of the
Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS) and
associated groups to (1) organize groups for regular worship and Bible
study, (2) foster worship services and Bible studies in such groups, and
(3) obtain and distribute Bibles and other literature for Christian
education.
To help meet basic physical needs,
WELS Mission to the Children (1) provides financial and material aid to needy families as
appropriate and (2) contributes to projects of general benefit to larger communities as may be appropriate. This physical ministry
is
administered to honor our Christian responsibility to help the truly
needy and promote our Gospel outreach.

How We Do This? ...
WELS Mission to the Children provides Bible
lessons for over 1000 little children from
thirteen towns and villages in Northern
Sonora Mexico. Mothers in the
villages volunteer to serve as the children's teachers. Children are
baptized upon request
of the parents.
Our greatest need is for monetary donations to
help support the two new
pastors that have been called to provide
spiritual growth for the children and their parents and neighbors.
This is a new WELS
concept since the
WELS
World Missions is NOT providing salary, benefits, or expenses for
the pastors. We have prayerfully stepped out in faith that the Lord
will provide these expenses so that the spiritual needs of these villages
might be fulfilled. Your donations will make this possible.
Due to instability in the area
we have been forced to abandon 8 small villages until we can safely return
to provide full support. Meanwhile, we pray for their safety and God's
continued watchful care.
In the past WELS Mission to the Children distributed over $5400 of food every month
($65,000/year) to over 600 families (including over 1000 little children). We
are still supporting families in 5 of the 13 villages and are hopeful of
resuming distribution in the other 8 villages as conditions allow.
WELS Mission to the Children provides
medicine and medical services for the poorest families. We pay for medical exams, tests,
and prescription medicine for the children. We also provide children's
vitamins, warm blankets and quilts.
Presently, WELS Mission to the Children operates
a Children's Center in Sasabe and has plans for a children's Internet Cafe
in Atil. Here the children can hear Bible stories, read books and play board games, view
Christian videos, and acquire some computer skills. The Centers are staffed
by local school teachers and mothers. We hope to expand services at the
Children's Centers as funding and volunteer support permits.
WELS Mission to the Children is establishing several projects to help the poor families of
Northern Sonora Mexico to become self-sufficient. Some of the projects we have
been or are currently involved with include:
Replace tin shacks with brick structures
Award scholarships to allow children to attend high school
Provide blankets and quilts to families in need during the winter months
Provide school supplies each August to supplement shortages
Provide Christmas presents for the children
Our U.S. office is located in Tucson, Arizona, and we serve
children in the following communities in Northern Mexico:
Sasabe,
Atil,
Altar,
Llano Blanco, and
16 de Septiembre.
In 1989 we began this work of Christian compassion in one
small village with 13 families and 25 children, distributing about $60 of food per month.
In 2010, by God's grace, we brought the Gospel to over 1500 children from
over 600
families in 13 towns and villages, distributing $6000 of food each month.
This year
our donations decreased reflecting the
economic downturn affecting our supporters. At the same time
we were only able to support the
children in 5 towns and villages instead of our usual 13 because of
instability in the region. We see God's hand at work for our future in
Sonora in spite of not knowing what is to come.
"And we know that in all things
God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according
to his purpose." Romans
8:28
-
Pray every day for the children and their families, our volunteers, and our ministry.
-
Your monetary offerings
allow us to provide food, Bible lessons, Bibles, medical
assistance, blankets, clothing, ministerial training, scholarships, and
housing to many poor children and their families. These offerings are
absolutely critical to continuing and expanding our work.

-
Your donations of material items such as Spanish Bibles,
children's vitamins, prenatal vitamins, blankets/quilts, baby items, and books
in Spanish are distributed directly to the neediest children.
Send for our Projects
Booklet for churches, church groups, and schools.
Donations of school supplies are
are needed by July 31st for distribution in August each year to students
and teachers.
(Gift

Your donations of items needed in our Children's Center
are also appreciated, such as books in Spanish, Spanish educational software,
videos (religious or educational) in Spanish, kitchen utensils, and sports
equipment (in good condition).
(Gift
Guidelines)
Christmas gifts are needed by November 30th every year, and we
distribute them at our Christmas Fiestas for the children in the villages. Over 1500
gifts are needed for newborn babies through age 15.
Watch this site and our newsletter for more information as Christmas draws near.

Financial grants from companies and corporations are
also needed for our
expanding ministry. Our work has grown so much under our Lord's gracious blessing that
soon we will have to have a larger church in Sasabe. Our 4 vehicles - 2 for our
humanitarian volunteers who spend at least one weekend a month in
Sonora, as well as 1 each for our churches in Sasabe and Altar -
take a beating on the primitive roads and regularly need repair and
replacement.
Equally exciting is our ability to accept credit or debit card payment with or
without a PayPal account from our web page using your credit card. We are
using PayPal as the medium for processing your contributions, a system which is
used by most commercial web sites and it has an excellent record for protecting
transactions. To use this convenient system, simply access our web site on
the Home page below, the Donations page, or the Contact page and scroll down until you
see the "Donate" icon. You do NOT have to
register with PayPal to Donate!
Thank you,
and may our Lord bless you richly for your generous and compassionate response to
the very great spiritual and physical needs of these precious little ones!
